Double Helix House

This charming video features an eccentric little home designed by Tokyo-based architectural unit onishimaki+hyakudayuki architects (o+h). Maki Onishi narrates their concept for this small house in Tokyo: their design responds to the penned in character of the site – only accessed by two narrow alleys. A long corridor/stairway spirals up the outside of the house, blending the vertical circulation with the family’s living spaces. The project takes its name from the fact an exterior stair winds its way upward atop the internal stair, creating a parallel vertical route outside the home.

This project is featured in our JA86: Summer 2012 and Shinkenchiku 2011:12.
