Exhibition Space

The mesmerizing appearance of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 1997 was a shock to the world. People rushed to Bilbao and upon seeing the brightly glistening form discovered new architecture.
However, overwhelmed by this form, people did not problematize questions of what is being displayed in the art museum, what art works are housed, and what is the relationship between the space and the exhibits.
Nearly a decade has passed since then, and art works and architecture are engaged in a new discourse. As Germain Viatte notes in his essay in this issue, there is a great deal of architecture emerging that focuses on the contents of an art museum. As he stated, Today, museology cannot limit itself to exhibiting works in a high-prestige, monumental building. The museum must be in tune with both the spirit and the letter of its contents.
In this issue, we introduce new exhibition spaces, as exemplified by the Muse du Quai Branly, centered on the vital relationship between the museum and the exhibited works.
