JA+U : Secret Base in Kakuozan by HAP+

Located in a residential district of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, the Secret Base in Kakuozan is two volumes situated upon hill. An open stairway runs through the middle, allowing the public to walk through the building and interact with the artists who live and work within, much like an old Mediterranean backstreet.

The interior spaces vary in size as they follow the slope of the site. The larger spaces at the bottom house residences. Smaller units at the top function as studios. The resident creators must go outside and use the stairway every time they travel between their room and work space, thus fostering their interaction with the public.

The architect aims to regenerate the flow of city through his building.

HAP+ was established in Nagoya by Takashi Yonezawa. A selection of their works, including the Secret Base in Kakuozan, are featured in JA 86 (Summer 2012).
