House in Komazawa

Our team recently visited this compact residence in Tokyo designed by Go Hasegawa. The 64 m2 (689 ft2) house is clad with a variety of eucalyptus (Red River Gum). Inside, thin exposed timber joists  – 38 mm by 64 mm (1.5 in by 2.5 in) –  create a grill-like floor on the upper level. They rest on steel beams that are suspended from the the central roof beam shortening the floor’s span without requiring additional columns below.

The project is featured in our magazines; Shinkenchiku December, 2011 and JA84 Winter, 2012.
