House in Fukaya

JA+U : House in Fukaya by Waro Kishi + K. Associates / Architects
This 190 m2 (2,045 ft2) is located in a residential neighborhood in Saitama, one of the prefectures bordering Tokyo. The architect – whose works are mostly in Kyoto or Osaka – felt the area’s townscape lacked character.

His response to the surroundings was to make the exterior of the house as anonymous as possible, also referring to the forms and materiality of commercial and factory buildings in the area. Within its outer walls, the home is very open.

Within its 9.6 meters by 23.4 meters (31.5 feet by 76.8 feet) rectangular plan, the house is configured in three parts. Private rooms and a garage are on the south side. A living / dining room are in a separate block to northern side. The two halves are divided by an open-air swimming pool within a courtyard at its center.

Because the surroundings are hidden behind tall glazed walls, the courtyard frames the sky above. This minimal composition of surface and water transforms with the changing atmosphere.

The double-ceiling height (4.5 meters or 14.7 feet) living / dining space open onto the courtyard, separated by full-height glazing attached to thin steel columns.

The study and garage are situated half a story lower than the living space. Above are bedrooms connected by a gently inclined exterior staircase that bridges the swimming pool.
