Gejo Thatch Tower

JA+U : Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012 "Gejo Thatch Tower" by MIKAN + Sogabe Lab. Kanagawa University

Architects Mikan and the students of Sogabe Laboratory at Kanagawa University designed this thatched tower – located by the Gejo train station – by reusing columns and beams from old minka – traditional Japanese farmhouses.

Inside, antique tools and equipment found in the minka are hung from the beams.

The building – originally designed by HIroshi Hara – has been renovated and reopened as a museum for the 2012 Triennale. In the central courtyard where there is a pond, Christian Boltanski exhibited a work entitled “No Man’s Land”.

Second floor lounge and cafe. The space is designed by Massimo Bartolini feat. Lorenzo Bini.

 

Australia House

The recently-built Australia House was inaugurated this year. A competition was held after the original facility was destroyed by the earthquake in Nagano Prefecture in March 2011. The competition-winning building – designed by Andrew Burns Architect has a steep pointed roof to withstand the heavy snowfall in Niigata Prefecture and stained cedar cladding.

Inside the house, art pieces such as Brook Andrew’s “Dhirrayn Ngurang—Mountain Home” were exhibited.

This building was built along the platform of Echigo-Tazawa station. It houses work by artist Tatsuo Kawaguchi.

Japanese artists Takuto Hiki and Takumi Honda brought in 7m3 (247 ft3) of local soil into an old elementary school and covered the corridor floors. They compacted the dirt to make the pathway walkable.
