Contemporary Art Center Córdoba

The Contemporary Art Center Córdoba is indented with hexagonal patterns – a traditional Islamic motif.  The cavities are clustered and distorted across two elongated rectangular volumes.

The building contains a theater, galleries, workshops and laboratories.

The asymmetrical hexagons vary widely in size and shape. At the macro scale, one polygon forms a six-sided theater, while others are clustered to form exhibition spaces. The roof over these geometrical interiors is formed by concrete lightwells, funneling the Andalucian sunlight downward into the cavernous interior.

At the micro scale, the hexagonal motif is repeated along the glass reinforced concrete-panelled facades, creating indentations and perforations. Throughout the day, shadows within the sharp angular relief shift with the the sun’s trajectory.

At night, the east facade will be lit by computer-programmed LED lights embedded behind its polygonal veil. The lights – designed in collaboration with Realities:United – will be reflected on the Guadalquivir River.

The project is currently under construction and will be completed later this year. We plan to provide an update then.
